TALMAGE FARM

Designed for a young family of four, the massing of Talmage Farm is contextual to the surrounding traditional farmhouses in East Hampton. A steep roofline emphasizes the sloped ceiling and draws from the farm house typology, but is conveyed through a modern language in its massing as well as muted and minimal materials such as vertical Alaskan yellow cedar boards, corrugated aluminum and large floor-to-ceiling windows.

A glass corridor divides the private programs from the public, allowing for acoustic and visual separation while also establishing an articulated flow through the home. Visual connection to the outdoors is emphasized through ample glazing and the glass entry that looks onto a small courtyard with a flowering tree. Stacked upon two-stories, the sleeping quarters highlight verticality and are contrasted by a horizontal volume that houses the living space, kitchen, dining area and garage. The public volume faces the street, and facilitates easy access to the pool and grill area in the back while the private volume is pushed towards the back and side yard, encouraging rest and serenity.
